“Letter to a Child Never Born: Zohaib Nizar Baloch
Oriana Fallaci was an Italian author, journalist and political interviewer at the time of World War II. She interviewed great leaders of her time and published two books of interviews named “Interview with history” and “Interview with history with power”.
“Letter to a Child never born” is a dedicated book to women all across the world. The book starts with a question when the woman asks herself whether the baby wants to get born or not when she feels the baby inside her. She wishes the baby or cluster of the cell could give her a sign so she could know whether or not to bring it in the world.
After seeing a photograph of the embryo of three weeks old and receiving no sign, she decides to bring the baby in the world.
She wonders about the gender of the baby, then she realised it was a boy. The world is made for men, their dominance in the world is so ancient (Although it was women’s dominance before men in the world).
She had wished her baby born as a baby girl so that she would face all she herself had been through; and then she thought her baby to born as a boy too as he won’t have to worry being raped in the dark streets. People won’t tell you that it were a sin getting born as a girl the day you pick an apple. He does not have to endure people’s taunt what a woman bears in her daily life.
In her appointment with the doctor congratulating her “Madam” and then she corrected him rapidly saying ‘Miss’. He crossed and wrote “Miss” but all the joy from doctor’s face vanished which she thought to be a warning for the future. They will not be accepted this way like that sheet where it is obvious to be ‘Mrs’ to be pregnant not a ‘Miss’ what doctor was shocked to hear.
Her friend advised her to have an abortion as she herself had four abortions. She emphasised that not even chickens bring all the babies and she instanced some other animals too to convince her for an abortion. Later that day she had some nightmares which were due to depression because of people’s reactions and thoughts about her.
In-between a day, her father comes to meet her. She does not accept because he has not been supportive when she really needed him to stand by her.
After a couple of days she goes to a ten-day trip by car which she interrupted because she was bleeding continuously. And then she headed to the hospital where the doctor says her baby has died.
This work of Oriana Fallaci on feminism is worth of attention. In the collection, she has highlighted the issue a woman faces when she is pregnant in such cases where the partner is not supportive and abandoned her. Even though it would be a mistake or a choice of both man and woman respectively but society will not remember the man and will not forget and forgive the woman’s choice and fault.
It is a woman who is accountable for everything at the end. I admire this work of the writer and draw my moral support to women all across the world.
