The tale of Hani and Shay Mureed: Najeeb Swali
Balochistan holds significant amount of historical love stories. When we flip the pages of history, like the wars, Baloch have been true and loyal lovers too. Among the ancient Baloch love stories, Hani and Shay Mureed’s true love story stands higher in ranks. Shay Mureed was a beloved epic ballad of Balochi folklore.
Their story originated in 15th century. Shay Mureed was the son of Shay Mubarak. He was a master in the art of swordman and horsemanship. Besides this, he was a brave man of the then era.
On the other hand, Hani was the daughter of Mir Dinar. She was famous for her beautiful look. Hani was betrothed to Shay Mureed as they both were cousins and good friends.
One day, when Mir Chakar Khan Rind went for hunting, they were finished with water midway. They turned to Hani’s town which was the nearest to them. Coincidentally, they went to Mir Dinar’s home where, at that very moment, no man was present. Hani felt their thirst and took water for them. She brought water from a silver bowl in which she placed dwarf palm leaf. Mir Chakar was surprised looking at her sharpness. He drank the water carefully.
Mir Chakar Rind, after this incident, asked for Hani and got to know about Hani’s discreetness. Some days later, Mir Chakar arranged a planned gathering where all poets and noble people were invited, including Shay Mureed. He asked them to make vows.
At the first, Mir Jado promised that if anyone would touch his beard, he would chop off his head: in return it was his grandson who sat on his lap and touched his beards. As promised in the gathering, he was compelled to kill him.
Secondly, Mir Haibitan vowed if anybody’s camel would join his herd, he would not give them back; it resulted in a huge conflict in their town.
When Shay Mureed’s turn came, he promised to fulfill anyone’s wish [if under his possession] if he or she asks for after Thursday morning prayers. Lastly, Mir Chakar promised not to stand up from his place under a tree if it is cut [which literally was the easiest promise in the gathering].
On Thursday morning, Mir Chakar Rind sent his slaves to Shay Mureed to ask him to give Hani to Mir Chakar. Shay Mureed was shocked. Unfortunately, his brightest face changed into the darkest, but he, with a heavy heart and full sadness, freed Hani from him. Hani was not happy with this decision, but she could do nothing except to accept it.
Painfully, Mureed passed the days and nights in worship of Allah thereafter and left the country. He went to Saudi Arabia and spent 30 years in Makkah and Madina.
After 30 years, he came back to his native place Sibi with shabby clothes and long hairs. He started begging. When he went for begging at the place of Mir Chakar Khan Rind, Hani recognized him. Hani asked Chakar to divorce her so that she would go back to Shay Mureed. As Hani and Chakar had no any physical bonds, Chakar divorced her.
People say they both went away from their town and till date their souls are wandering around. Because true love never dies and so as Hani and Shay Mureed.
