Importance of journalism: Muhammad Bakhtiyar
No one can deny the fact that journalism plays undeniably critical role in the betterment of several matters of a country, and gets even more significance in a place where everything is undercover, important events are twisted, falsely embellished and very cleverly spread-out to masses that leaves them no other choice but to believe and perceive them the way manifested.
But in today’s world, they are not safe and sound everywhere around the world, especially in province of Balochistan, where journalists lose their lives frequently, and where authorities often utterly fail to arrest and punish elements behind their demise. If a journalist says something critical of a given department, that person will start to receive threats through various unknown sources, and in case of defiance by that journalist, he can easily be killed. This can be the reason that no one is willing to go in field of journalism.
According to a report, reporting in Balochistan was far less dangerous in 2002, but in the following years, the situation has gradually grown only worse, and today you can’t report the truth about any major issue or stakeholder in the region.
Let me clear something here that every year, November is marked for a month-long global campaign to end impunity and ensure the safety of the journalists world over. But the situation is getting only worse for journalists in Balochistan, and all are silent out of fear of dire consequences, which at times include deadly ones as well. On the other hand, government has been pathetically helpless in taking effective action for the safety of journalists.
The concerned authorities should launch awareness programs on the important role of journalism in our society, as well as the scopes of journalism in the present era to create awareness among the people about the importance and value of journalist and journalism in today’s world.
